Microsoft's 13-inch Surface Laptop with Snapdragon X Plus and Apple's 13-inch MacBook Air with M5 are both thin ARM-based laptops with long battery claims. The operating system is the first decision; the hardware differences follow.
Surface figures come from Microsoft Learn's technical specifications for the business edition (updated October 2026) and MacBook Air figures from Apple's compare page, both re-read on 2026-11-02.
Key differences at a glance
- Processor: Snapdragon X Plus (8-core) with a 45 TOPS NPU against Apple M5 with a 10-core CPU and 16-core Neural Engine.
- Display: 13-inch 1920×1280 3:2 touchscreen at 400 nits and 60 Hz against 13.6-inch 2560×1664 at 500 nits without touch.
- Storage: removable 256GB or 512GB UFS, or a 1TB Gen 4 SSD, against 512GB to 4TB.
- Ports: two USB-C (USB 3.2, DisplayPort 1.4a), USB-A and a headphone jack on the Surface; Apple's page did not capture ports.
- Battery claims: up to 23 hours of local video and 16 hours of web use (Microsoft, March 2025) against up to 18 hours (Apple).

Display and input
The Surface's 3:2 touchscreen is taller relative to its width, which suits documents and web pages, and touch adds a second input method. The MacBook Air's panel has more pixels (2560×1664 against 1920×1280) and is brighter on paper (500 against 400 nits), which favours photo work and outdoor use. Both are around 13 inches.
Performance and AI hardware
Microsoft lists a Qualcomm Hexagon NPU at 45 TOPS, which qualifies the device for Copilot+ PC features in Windows. Apple lists a 16-core Neural Engine without a TOPS figure on this page. NPU figures from different vendors are not directly comparable, and we have not benchmarked either machine. Windows on ARM runs most modern apps natively or through emulation; check any specialist software you rely on.
Ports, storage and serviceability
The Surface lists two USB-C ports with DisplayPort 1.4a (up to two 4K 60 Hz displays), a USB-A port and a headphone jack, plus Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 5.4. Its storage is removable, and Microsoft lists replacement components including the battery and display. Apple's compare page did not capture the MacBook Air's ports or wireless.
Battery and weight
Microsoft's battery claims come with test details (March 2025, 1080p local video and web browsing at fixed brightness); Apple claims up to 18 hours. Test methods differ, so the numbers are not directly comparable. Both weigh about 1.22–1.23 kg.
